Polyurethane vs. Oils: Which is Best?
Choosing the right finish is crucial for the look and longevity of your floor. We offer the top three systems used in New Zealand:
01.
Water-Based Polyurethane
Best for: Modern homes, fast drying, low smell
Water-based finishes are non-yellowing, meaning your wood keeps its natural colour. They dry quickly (allowing multiple coats in a day) and have very low toxicity/smell.
02.
Moisture-Cured Polyurethane
Best for: High durability, rental properties
This traditional solvent-based finish is extremely hard-wearing. It darkens the timber slightly, giving that classic "golden" Rimu look. Note: Stronger smell during application.
03.
Hardwax Oils (Rubio / Bona)
Best for: Natural matte look, eco-friendly
Oils penetrate the wood rather than sitting on top. They give a beautiful, natural feel and are very easy to repair if scratched, without needing to re-sand the whole floor.
Staining and Colouring
Want to change the look of your floor entirely? We can apply wood stains before the final finish.
Popular Trends
Whitewash / Blonding for a Scandi or Coastal look.
Dark Oak / Walnut for a dramatic, luxury feel.
Staining requires impeccable sanding prep, as any scratch will show up through the colour. Our expert sanders ensure a perfect canvas for your chosen colour.
