How to Measure Your Floor
A simple guide to calculating square metres (m²) for your renovation.
Getting an accurate quote for floor sanding starts with knowing the size of your space. You don't need a professional laser measure to get it right—a standard tape measure and a calculator are all you need.
Tools You Will Need
- 📏Tape Measure
- 📝Notepad & Pen
- 📱Calculator
Step 1: The Basic Rectangle
Most rooms are rectangular. Measuring these is simple:
- Measure the Length of the room from wall to wall.
- Measure the Width of the room.
- Multiply the Length by the Width.
Length (m) × Width (m) = Area (m²)
Example: 5m × 4m = 20m²
Step 2: L-Shaped Rooms
Don't try to measure an L-shaped room all at once. Break it down into two separate rectangles.
- Imagine a line splitting the room into Rectangle A and Rectangle B.
- Calculate the area of Rectangle A.
- Calculate the area of Rectangle B.
- Add them together to get the total.
Step 3: Hallways and Alcoves
For hallways, measure the main stretch first. If there are small off-shoots or cupboards you want sanded, measure them separately as small rectangles and add them to your total.
Tip: If you have a bay window or fireplace hearth, treat it as a small extra rectangle.
Step 4: Combine and Round Up
Once you have the area for each room:
- Lounge: 25m²
- Dining: 15m²
- Hallway: 8m²
- Total: 48m²
It is always a good idea to round up slightly. If your calculation is 48.2m², call it 50m². This ensures any slight variations don't lead to under-quoting.
